Straight From The Streets Of The French Quarter

New Orleans. The French Quarter. Perhaps one of the most famous neighborhoods in the world. When New Orleans was founded in 1718 it was centered in the French Quarter or the Old Square. The whole district is a National Historic Landmark and contains numerous individual historically relevant buildings.
By 1850 the district had fallen into disrepair and was revived through the efforts of Baroness Michaela Pontalba. The apartment buildings she had built are still there today and are the oldest buildings in the United States. The French Quarter fell into hard times again in the late nineteenth century and had become little more than slums but was restored by restoration preservationists in a project that is still ongoing.
The center of the French Quarter is Jackson Square which is an area where you can find such places as the Cafe Du Monde, the Pontalba Buildings, the Jax Brewery building and St. Louis Cathedral. Live music pours from the clubs up and down Bourbon Street and treasures can be found in the antique shops on Royal Street. Fortunately for the district Hurricane Katrina did relatively little damage during it’s onslaught.
Visit New Orleans as soon and as often as you can.
