Color Natchitoches in Culture

Color Natchitoches in Culture is an art activity and contest for school children of Natchitoches Parish. This activity will encourage artistic expression, exploration, and a deeper understanding of the area's culture. This activity will be a creative stimulus to "show our culture-past, present, and future" through the eyes of children of all ages. Participants will be encouraged to express visually their personal experiences of life in this historic area of Louisiana, the history that brought them here and their personal visions for the future. Students' work will be categorized according to age group, with twelve winning entries selected. The winning entries will be a featured display in the window of the Natchitoches Art Gallery on Front Street for the period of one month. The remaining entries will be displayed at the Natchitoches Art Center, affording that every participating student the opportunity to display art.

Viewing of Draw the Line

The Olde Town Arts Center presents Draw the Line: 3 years post Katrina, an artists' invitational featuring George Dunbar, Patricia Whitty, Blake Boyd, Nancy Thodes, Martin Needhom, Nolan Lefort, Nell Landry, Susan Needhom, Phil Galatas, and Kathleen DesHotel. The Olde Towne Arts Center was formed to provide opportunities for artists after Hurricane Katrina destroyed Slidell Cleaners. The H2O line drawn on the front of the building suggested the title for this exhibition which allows the artists to display works that represent a range of situational contexts at this point in their professional and personal lives following the storm.

Drawings in Light

Visscher's Drawings in Light series explores the wrold of nature through the lens of science and geometry. In these new works, lights shine on strips of clear, shiny plastic (she uses either acetate or "pteg", a kind of polyethylene, which is a common and hard-to-open packaging material). The plastic is bent or scored to make curved lenses, causing shimmering reflections of light and shadow to fill the gallery walls. Technically, these are known as cusp casutic lenses, the result of light reflecting off a curved surface that focuses the individual rays into bright lines or curves. The patterns create mysterious and complex visual harmonies reminiscent of nature's undulating and repetitive forms.

Of Moving Colors Productions (OMC) offers workshops and performances of aerial and structural works for Schools and the Louisiana Dance Festival. In 2003, Set Designer Yvonne Boudreaux created a 12 foot structure for OMC Productions. The company has used this and other forms of aerial works to perform for the community over the last five years. Yet this October, will consolidate three special events into one project entitled OctoberFlight. OctoberFlight will begin with an Informance at Westside Elementary School where the company will discuss the creative process and aerial works and then offer a performance. The 2nd phase of the event will be a performance of a swing work (another aerial form) at the Louisiana Dance Festival and the final phase of the event will be abeginners workshop open to the public using different forms of aerial equipmant such as a tower, chairs, and ropes.

The Big Chief Donald Harrison, Sr. Book Club Presentation Cermonies were developed to inspire elementary level students to engage in reasing activities that support achievement in areas assessed on high stakes tests such as the LEAP. The ceremonial presentation of the books by community artists provide an embodied experience for students. The activities serve to enhance reading fluency, comprehension, and greater understanding of Jazz and the Mardi Gras Indian tradition through direct contact with authentic tradition bearers. Rendez-vous des Cajuns

A special performance by Cajun and Country music recording artist Jo-El Sonnier. Born and raised in Rayne, Louisiana to French speaking parents, Jo-El grew up surrounded by the language and music of his Cajun ancestors. He picked up the accordion at 3 years old and recorded his first music at age 11. Jo-El enjoyed success as a performer in Louisiana but, as a young man, left to perform in California and Nashville, TN, where he wrote songs for, and performed with such artists as Johnny Cash, George Strait, and Jerry Lee Lewis, just to name a few. Louisiana called to him and he reutrned home, writing and performing his beloved Cajun music and infusing it with a country flair in such hits as "Tear Stained Letter" and "Come on Joe" . Jo-EL continues to perform throughout the United States and it is a special treat to have him perform at the Liberty, just 30 miles from his hometown of Rayne, Louisiana.

The 5th Annual Okra Festival will feature several cooks who will compete for first, second, and third place awards for the best okra dishes. There are three categories: okra, chicken, and Anything Butt. Outdoor cooking will begin at 6am and all entries must be fully cooked and prepared to serve to the judges by 11:30am. Once the competition is complete, each participant may sell their dishes to the public. Patrons of the festival will also enjoy fantastic local Zydeco music by Chris Audoin and his Zydeco band. Chris Audoin who will begin his performance at 1pm and end at 5pm will be the highlight of the festival. A D.J. will provide music to the audience from 10am to 1pm and 5pm to 6pm. Two weeks prior to the festival and Okra King and Queen Pageant will be held and the public is invited to participate. The winners in each category will be invited to the festival where they will be presented to the public.

LCM's Art Fest is an annual celebration of the arts developed by LCM as a child- and family-friendly comlement to New Orleans' city-wide art celebration, Art for Art's Sake. This event celebrates Louisiana's Official State Insect, the honey bee with an apiary exhibit called "Louisiana Beekeeping". This is presented by professional Cajun fiddler and part-time bee keeper, Ann Vidrine. Elements in the exhibit include an exhibition hive with "see through" walls to allow for viewing bees at work, an in-depth look at a beekeeper's hive parts, and the sampling of a variety of local honeys such as wildflower, clover, and blueberry. Video, posters, and honey samples will be on display. Honey is a regional, cultural food product.

Pieux Redux: Fence Whitewashing

This event is the first in a three part series devoted to introducing both the public and preservation practitioners to Louisiana's French colonial pieux fences, such as the one encompassing the Louisiana Landmarks Society's 1799 West Indies style Creole country house on New Orleans' historic Bayou St. John. Attendees will study the traditional folk crafts involved in making and maintaining these once common and now rare features of the regional landscape. Participants in the first workshop will hear the history of whitewash as a protective and decorative finish for fences. Heather A. Knight, Professor of Preservation Technology in the Tulane School of Architecture Preservation Studies graduate program will demonstrate whitewash application techniques and teach her audience how to hand tint lime washes to create a palette of traditional Creole finishes. Pilot House tours will confirm the Creole taste for color.

An Evening of Works by Martha Graham

The 5th Annual Okra Festival will feature several cooks who will compete for first, second, and third place awards for the best okra dishes. There are three categories: okra, chicken, and Anything Butt. Outdoor cooking will begin at 6am amd all entries

The Congo Square Market re-creates the marketplace that made Congo Square so influential and historic and will not onl include vendors of produce, prepared foods, arts and afro-centric imports, but will also include performances and demonstrations, some of which will be designed to include and teach audience members, every Sunday during the month of October from 12pm til 5pm in Congo Square / Louis Armstrong Park, New Orleans, Louisiana. The Market will be kicked off with the Congo Square Rhythms Festival October 4&5 which will feature two stages and many more activities and vendors.
